About the role

In this role you will provide senior advice and support within Drill & Blast planning and design. This rewarding role will see you provide daily mentoring, guidance, instruction, and training to our junior engineer as we expand our underground gold operation at Kainantu.

Key / Major Accountabilities

Key accountabilities of this position include.

  • Ensure the drill and blast activities are carried out to meet company production requirements in a safe and cost – effective manner.
  • Monitor the performance of any contractors involved in these activities.
  • Reviews with other engineering specialist, mining production targets and ore specifications and liaises with process personnel accordingly.
  • Ensures that adequate amounts of explosives and drilling equipment are pre- ordered to meet anticipated schedules.
  • Monitors the safe storage of and handling of all explosives.
  • Ensure the effective completion of all medium, long term and/or strategic mine planning activities for underground drill and blast operations, including production scheduling, reconciliation, reporting, underground mine optimisation, design, cost estimations, along with conduct of meetings, and supervision, development and mentoring of mine planning and projects engineers.
  • Ensure effective design and development of mining projects as required by the HOD Mine Technical Services and HOD Mining.
  • Ensure all aspects of mining operations design and planning comply with Company policy and statutory requirements including health and safety, environment, and agreement with landowners.
  • Ensure that technical projects are progressed in a timely manner. Optimize operational mining efficiency, maintaining cost control and maximizing production.
  • Provide effective guidance to mine supervision and projects engineers in minor contract management, evaluating contractor performance and ensuring that all contractor employees work safely in accordance with K92 standards.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to ensure the effective and timely completion of production and capital expenditure projects by the assigned supervision and projects engineers.
  • Develop and submit for approval operating mine design plans that are compatible with site targets and goals.
  • Provide advice to the operations on short to medium term strategic plan to meet the business targets.
  • Mentor, train and up-skill Mine Engineers and Graduate Mining Engineers
  • Report on project progress and provide understanding of any variations.
  • Engage and manage suppliers and contractors to ensure safe and timely delivery of project plans.
  • Identification of CAPEX and OPEX opportunities
  • Maintain safe work standards and practices in accordance with government and company policy
  • Ensure all aspects of mining drill and blast operations design and planning comply with Company policy and statutory requirements including health and safety, environment, and agreement with landowners.
  • Ensure that technical drill and blast projects are progressed in a timely manner. Optimize operational mining efficiency, maintaining cost control and maximizing production.
  • Develop and submit for approval drill and blast mine design plans that are compatible with site targets and goals.
  • Prepare drill and blast plan in line with Life of Mine and Monthly Operational Plans and regular reports (e.g. daily, monthly, and quarterly) and special submissions as required.
  • Ensure effective processes for communicating relevant information, including company, site, department, and team performance, to all team members are in place
  • Actively promotes a safe and healthy culture.
  • Demonstrates personal responsibility for own health and safety whilst setting clear expectations of relevant legal obligations, safe workplace practices and HSE operating practices to others, holding them accountable for their actions.
  • Perform general housekeeping within and around responsible work area

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong character who is prepared to make hard decisions and deliver results. In addition to this, you will have the following.

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from a recognized institution.
  • A Shot Firers permit and Explosive handling certification to Australian Standards.
  • Extensive experience at a supervisory level in drill and blast preferably in an underground mine.
  • Behaviour consistent with K92 Mining’s Values.
  • Thorough knowledge of the PNG Mine Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Sound experience in mining engineering, preferably in an open pit environment, with sound exposure to production activities including production planning, works contracts and capital projects.
  • Prior experience in leading a team of junior engineers.
  • High degree of competency in computer applications including Excel, Access, MS Project, along with exposure to Deswik, Surpac, or Vulcan, or similar mine planning software applications.
  • Mining operational experience and five plus (5+) years’ appropriate technical experience in a similar role.
  • Sound knowledge of safe mining practices and standards
  • Ventilation and blasting design experience and have a working knowledge of geotechnical aspects impacting designs and operations.
  • Proven multitasking skills and can work under extreme pressure.
  • Good analytical and teamwork skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as well as good organizational and administrative skills.
