About the role

Joining our external affairs team, the Principal - Media and Communications will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication plans to enhance the company's reputation and engagement with key stakeholders in PNG. This role will involve managing media relations, creating content for various communication channels, and ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working with the teams from Group Business Development, Community Affairs & External Relations, and Human Resources, to create and execute integrated communication plans to support the company’s objectives.
  • Drive consistent application of the K92 investor and employer brand from a visual identity perspective and identify opportunities to improve recognition of the K92 investor and employer brand.
  • Monitor industry trends and public sentiment to inform communication strategies.
  • Conduct research to support communication initiatives and measure their effectiveness.
  • Coordinate promotional or official events for the operations or corporate groups as required.
  • Accompany key personnel to planned activities and record events for publishing purposes.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President Government & Community Affairs to ensure alignment of communication efforts with overall business goals.
  • Oversee the work of the direct report, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality output.
  • Coordinate communication activities and events in Papua New Guinea.
  • Manage media relations, including drafting press releases, social media posts, responding to media inquiries, and organising press conferences.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage and public perception, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement.
  • Respond to and manage inquiries from the public and media.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including media outlets, government agencies, and community groups.
  • Monitor social media on various platforms and prepare responses, where appropriate, in conjunction with the relevant Team.
  • Report any breach of social media to the HR Department.
  • Manage the community radio station including development of relevant content and programs.
  • Manage the communication section of the K92 Intranet in conjunction with Group Business Development.
  • Develop and manage a library of approved imagery for K92 employees and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and design a wide range of communication materials and tools to support the senior leadership team members including Internal newsletters, Community newsletters, Speeches, Fact sheets, Advertisements.
  • Display materials for internal and external events including for career fairs, conferences and other external activities.
  • Graphic design and videography (filming, editing and producing).
  • Annual report / sustainability report coordination.
  • Publications including information sheets, banners, posters etc.
  • Social and Health Awareness campaigns.
  • Communication of quarterly business results including town halls.
  • Shortlisting, commissioning and working with specialist branding agency to develop new mediums or refresh the K92 brand.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders reliant on the new brand including the website and intranet rebrand teams
  • Continuing to advise on the use of the brand to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage a standard branded merchandise catalogue.
  • Review and update standard templates and K92 Branding Guides.
  • Review and recommend for approval of any medium e.g. presentations, articles, images, video/drone footage or academic papers for external use.
  • Review and audit all internal communication including notice boards to ensure compliance with K92 brand requirements.
  • Develop and implement crisis communication plans to manage and mitigate potential risks.
  • Act as the primary point of contact during crisis situations, ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have a Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field as well as some or all of the following

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in media and communications, preferably within the mining or resource sector.
  • Proven track record in managing media relations and developing successful communication strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to travel and spend time at both Port Moresby and the mining site.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism.
  • Creative thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to handle multiple priorities
