PRINTING SERVICES

Press Operator

The Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining printing presses to produce high-quality printed materials according to client specifications. This role involves handling various printing processes, ensuring the presses are running efficiently, monitoring the quality of output, and troubleshooting any press-related issues. The Press Operator must have an in-depth understanding of the print production process and be able to work with different types of presses and substrates.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate various types of printing presses (e.g., offset, digital, or flexographic presses) according to job specifications.
  • Adjust press settings to ensure that ink distribution, temperature, speed, and other variables are correct for the job.
  • Load paper, plates, inks, and other materials required for the job.
  • Perform quality checks throughout the production run, ensuring colors and registration meet client expectations.
  • Monitor the quality of printed materials by checking for consistency in color, alignment, and overall appearance.
  • Troubleshoot and adjust press mechanics, such as ink flow, pressure, and alignment, to maintain high-quality output.
  • Perform test runs and make necessary adjustments before full production.
  • Ensure the final product meets or exceeds client requirements and internal quality standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the presses to ensure proper functioning and prevent breakdowns.
  • Identify and troubleshoot mechanical or printing problems during the press run.
  • Report any issues or malfunctions to the maintenance team or supervisor to minimize downtime.
  • Review and interpret job tickets, specifications, and work orders to ensure accurate production.
  • Record production data, including the number of units produced, materials used, and any issues encountered during the run.
  • Ensure accurate documentation for each job, including ink usage, press settings, and paper type.
  • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while operating the press and handling chemicals, inks, and other materials.
  • Ensure that pressroom equipment is used in compliance with company safety policies.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment to prevent accidents and ensure smooth operations.

Job Requirements

The successful candidates must have a Diploma or equivalent Technical Certification in print technology or a related field with at least 2+ years of experience operating printing presses, preferably in a production environment. She or he should have experience with offset or digital presses, knowledge of pre-press processes and color management, proficiency in setting up and operating printing presses and related equipment, excellent attention to detail and quality control skills. In addition, the candidates should have the understanding of color theory and ability to make adjustments to ensure accurate color reproduction, possess strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple print jobs efficiently, ability to troubleshoot mechanical and printing issues quickly and effectively, and follow safety protocols in a fast-paced environment. She or he should also be able to stand for extended periods and lift heavy materials, and be willing to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, or overtime as required to meet production deadlines.

Conditions of Service

Technical Officer I/II: K26, 709.00 – K38, 241.00 per annum

Domestic Market Allowance: K1, 200.00 per annum

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
