TYPE / DURATION: Full-time – 12-month contract

ABOUT KTF:

KTF is an Australian international aid and development organisation working in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

We work with people and communities to improve the lives and futures of Papua New Guineans. We do this by: assisting remote and rural communities with access to elementary and primary education; improving access to quality and accessible healthcare; improving equality and access to sustainable income-generation opportunities, especially for women; and by fostering the next generation of leaders.

KTF is a member of the Australian Council for International Development and is accredited with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australian Not-for-Profit Cooperation Program.

THE BALIMO COLLEGE EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS:

The Balimo College educational campus was established by SDP in 2019 to build the education and health standards and pathways for the Western Province. Through the college, SDP delivers tertiary qualifications in Teaching under the Balimo Teachers College program; provides secondary school certification and GPA upgrades through Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE); supports schools in the area through E-Learning programs; and in 2024, opened the Hon. Roy Biyama Balimo Academy.

HON. ROY BIYAMA BALIMO ACADEMY (the Academy):

The Academy is a PNG Sustainable Development Program initiative implemented in partnership with KTF. The Academy caters for all levels of schooling, including Early Childhood Education, Primary Schooling and Secondary Schooling, and aims to grow to support 1,000 students by the end of 2028. The Academy fosters an environment conducive to quality teaching and learning, being inclusive and responsive to additional needs, and removing educational barriers for local students to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Librarian is responsible for leading the efficient management and administration of the Academy library. This person will operate within the Academy team as determined by the Principal and Deputy Principal. The Librarian will help create an inviting and organised environment for students, including by maintaining efficient and accessible borrowing procedures and ensuring library resources are organised and managed effectively. The librarian will teach students how to find, evaluate and use information resources effectively through lessons and workshops. The person will have strong administrative skills and ICT competencies including email and database management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Vision, Mission and Culture

  • Uphold the values and policies of the Hon. Roy Biyama Balimo Academy

Administration

  • Be familiar with the Academy’s administration procedures;
  • Ensure borrowing procedures are efficient and accessible;
  • Monitor and manage the library inventory;
  • Support the academic staff by providing resources in line with the curriculum;
  • Alert the Principal to any maintenance or resourcing requirements that you are aware of;
  • Alert the Principal to any issues of Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures on site.

Teaching & Learning

  • Support student engagement within the library, assisting students with finding library materials;
  • Developing and maintaining an organised and inviting library;
  • Pro-actively enhance the quality of teaching and learning through considerate and detailed resources;
  • Promote the use of ICT and of developments in Digital Learning Technologies and actively support the students to enable their studies with the support of ICT;
  • Engage in the support needed to utilise technology for implementation in the classroom;

Professional Development

  • Attend PD sessions as agreed and advised in conversation with your line manager.

YOUR SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

The ideal candidate will have:

Experience in:

  • Management of a school library.

Knowledge of:

  • Computer programs and services: Word, Office, Excel and Gmail.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of online databases
  • Knowledge and understanding of library management and organisation, including fiction and non-fiction resources.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and students.
  • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures to students and parents.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Operate a computer to a good level of competence.
  • Work independently with maintaining library.
  • Plan, organise and prioritise work.

Formal Qualifications:

  • Degree level graduate
