TYPE / DURATION: Full-time, 12-month contract

ABOUT KTF:

KTF is an Australian international aid and development organisation working in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

We work with people and communities to improve the lives and futures of Papua New Guineans. We do this by: assisting remote and rural communities with access to elementary and primary education; improving access to quality and accessible healthcare; improving equality and access to sustainable income-generation opportunities, especially for women; and by fostering the next generation of leaders.

KTF is a member of the Australian Council for International Development and is accredited with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australian Not-for-Profit Cooperation Program.

THE BALIMO COLLEGE EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS:

The Balimo College educational campus was established by SDP in 2019 to build the education and health standards and pathways for the Western Province. Through the college, SDP delivers tertiary qualifications in Teaching under the Balimo Teachers College program; provides secondary school certification and GPA upgrades through Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE); supports schools in the area through E-Learning programs; and in 2024, opened the Hon. Roy Biyama Balimo Academy.

HON. ROY BIYAMA BALIMO ACADEMY (the Academy):

The Academy is a PNG Sustainable Development Program initiative implemented in partnership with KTF. The Academy caters for all levels of schooling, including Early Childhood Education, Primary Schooling and Secondary Schooling, and aims to grow to support 1,000 students by the end of 2028. The Academy fosters an environment conducive to quality teaching and learning, being inclusive and responsive to additional needs, and removing educational barriers for local students to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

ABOUT THE ROLES:

The Early Childhood and Primary teachers are passionate and qualified educators who are experienced in working with young-learners and have a passion for fostering holistic student development that focuses on cognitive, social & emotional, and physical development, in addition to academic performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

(the level of focus of below listed responsibilities will vary based on the age of children)

  1. Teaching:
    • Develop and deliver age-appropriate lesson plans and learning activities that align with the curriculum and PNG educational standards;
    • Conduct the teaching, marking, assessment and monitoring of the curriculum and determine instructional and assessment strategies to suit a range of student needs;
    • Identify and address the individual learning needs of students;
    • Utilise a variety of teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles;
    • Oversee and set student targets in accordance with the requirements of the curriculum;
    • Implement strategies to support students with varying developmental journeys;
  2. Child Development:
    • Support the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of each child;
    • Create a positive and inclusive atmosphere that promotes a sense of belonging and community among children;
    • Provide nurturing care and supervision for young children;
    • Implement daily routines that may include meals, nap times, and engaging activities;
    • Facilitate positive relationships with parents, encouraging their involvement in the learning process;
    • Conduct regular parent-teacher meetings and provide feedback on children's development.
  3. Student support and classroom management:
    • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning, including encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning;
    • Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure a respectful and focused learning atmosphere;
    • Motivate and monitor students throughout the academic year;
    • Support students as they approach and take exams to be fully prepared and confident with the process and material;
    • Research, prepare and customise learning materials suitable for a range of teaching and learning settings and a range of students.
  4. Student Assessment:
    • Maintain accurate records of each child's development, activities, and any significant milestones;
    • Prepare progress reports and assessments as needed;
    • Conduct marking and assessment and provide appropriate feedback throughout the year;
    • Efficiently and effectively collect data and manage that to inform ongoing teaching strategies;
    • Create individualised learning plans for students with required additional needs;
    • Adapt learning and assessment tasks to a range of learner abilities;
    • Develop and administer assessments to evaluate student progress;
    • Provide constructive feedback to students and parents on academic performance;
  5. Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Academy, SDP and KTF to enhance the overall educational experience;
    • Participate in department meetings and professional development activities.
  6. Parent and Guardian Communication:
    • Maintain open and effective communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress;
    • Attend parent-teacher conferences and other school-related events.
  7. Operations
    • Maintain accurate records of students’ attendance, progress and assessment and communicate these to Principal and Deputy Principal.
  1. Professional Development:
  • Stay abreast of current educational trends, teaching methodologies, and subject-specific developments;
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities.
  1. Other
    • Any other duties as directed by the Academy Management;
    • Adhere to all KTF policies and procedures including child protection policy, no-alcohol, drugs & buai policy, disability policy, gender equity policy, and counter terrorism policy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree of Education – Primary;
  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience with teaching registration obtained (Primary/Elementary/Early Childhood);

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Knowledge of educational regulations and compliance standards in PNG;
  • Knowledge of unique requirements of Early-Years Education and young-learners;
  • High level of emotional intelligence;
  • High level of communication, mentoring and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently or as a member of a team;
  • Ability to research, select and use a wide range of teaching and assessment strategies to suit the needs of a diverse range of students, including those with disabilities and from other disadvantaged groups;
  • A good understanding and competence of technology for email communications, data management, administration;
  • Possess the ability to apply information and communication technologies to the teaching and learning process as well as collecting, organising and processing relevant data;
  • Open to learning new and innovative approaches to learning through use of technology;

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have the right to work in PNG;
  • This position may require travel within PNG from time to time;
