Peace Building Officer - (Morobe Based)

CARE International in PNG is recruiting a Peace Building Officer under the WASH & Peace Project based in Morobe. CARE is an international development and relief organisation that fights global poverty. It has a special focus on working with women and girls to bring lasting change to their communities. The WASH and Conflict Prevention Manager provides senior-level leadership and management oversight across the project implementation. This includes planning, implementation, and budget management, monitoring, and producing timely donor reports on the project. The position involves the management of project support and technical staff who focus primarily on water, sanitation, hygiene promotion, social inclusion, and gender equality.

WASH and Peace Project Officer’s key activities include working with government and other partners in supporting schools and communities to identify triggers of conflict and develop strategies to mitigate violence, support local leaders to facilitate appropriate peace strategies and ensure children have access to WASH services in and environment that is safe and peaceful.

The Project Officer will assist the Project Manager to implement the WASH and Peace Project in accordance with the project design document. A key responsibility will be to collaborate with key stakeholders and implement peace building work in the two districts of Bulolo and Huon Gulf District.

This role is based in Morobe with frequent travels to the schools and communities in the districts.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Minimum college or diploma qualification in the field of Social Science, Community Development, Peace Building and other relevant field.
  • 3-5 years’ experience doing community development work with demonstrated experience doing peace building, disaster risk reduction, child protection and WASH related activities.
  • Ability to mobilize community and effectively engage them in development programming activities.
  • Ability to forge strong relationship with partners for project impact and scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with partners;
  • Experience in community level disaster risk reduction techniques;
  • Proven skills and experience in facilitating training and capacity-strengthening, including an understanding of adult learning principles and participatory methodologies;
  • Demonstrated experience in following standard policies, procedures and processes and ensure the implementation of basic standard transactions including the management and acquittal of a cash advance;
  • A willingness to learn about CARE, gender equality and women’s empowerment activities;
  • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, sound judgment, planning, problem solving and team building skills;
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills, working in a team and the ability to work under pressure and to organise and manage workload to meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated characteristics in honesty, reliability, trustworthiness with the ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated ability to contributes to group objectives and work effectively in a group setting;
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in both Pidgin and English; and
  • Fully conversant in Microsoft Word, Excel and numeric skills
