The Institute of Business Studies (IBS), from its’ humble beginning in 1987 as an arm of Nades & Associates primarily providing revision classes for the needs of Papua New Guinea Institute of Accountants (now CPA PNG), has evolved into a private University level Institution over the last 34 years. Today we are in one of the largest business schools in the country and off degree programmes in the fields of Accounting & Finance, Business & Management, Economics & Development Studies and Information Technology. We also continue to provide study pathways for grade 10 & 11 school leavers including industry accreditations for those seasoned professionals who want to get certified in their field.

LICENSED ELECTRICIAN

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

We are seeking a highly skilled and Certified Licensed Electrician to carry out electrical installations across our buildings at IBSUniversity. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical systems are installed efficiently comply with PNG standard electricity regulations, and meet the highest safety standards.

MAJOR ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Installation

  • Install electrical systems such as lighting, power outlets, switchboards, and electrical equipment in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
  • Install safety systems such as alarms, circuit breakers, and fire detection equipment.

Maintenance and Repair

  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure electrical systems are operating efficiently and safely.
  • Diagnose malfunctions and repair faulty components or wiring.
  • Replace old or defective parts such as switches, fuses, or circuit breakers.
  • Ensure that preventive maintenance tasks are carried out.
  • Maintain accurate records of electrical work performed, including materials used and project timelines.

Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to local, state, or national electrical codes during installations, repairs, or upgrades.
  • Employ safe working practices and use safety equipment to protect themselves and others.
  • Ensure proper grounding and safety measures in all electrical installations.
  • Ensure that work environments are safe and free from electrical hazards.

Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose electrical issues using relevant tools.
  • Identify and fix issues with electrical systems or equipment.
  • Test electrical systems and circuits using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes.

Design and Planning

  • Read and interpret blueprints, circuit diagrams, and other technical documents.
  • Plan the layout of electrical systems, ensuring the most efficient and safe design.
  • Coordinate with the Facility Management Team to complete projects efficiently.

Equipment Management

  • Maintain equipment and tools in good working condition.
  • Ensure that the right tools are used for specific tasks to ensure safety and efficiency.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION/SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Must hold a valid Trades Electrical License.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical installation, preferably in commercial or institutional settings.
  • Strong understanding of electrical codes, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Experience working with high-voltage and low-voltage systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Proficiency in using electrical testing tools and equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Experience working on large-scale projects involving electrical infrastructure.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as required.
