POSITION TITLE: INTERPRETER (Temporary position)

CONTEXT

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization, founded in 1971 and working in 70 countries around the world. MSF provides medical assistance to populations in crisis, regardless of race, religion, belief or political affiliation. In PNG, MSF has been working since 2007 in Lae, Taric, Bougainville, Gulf and NCD Provinces. MSF is now working to support the Department of Health to improve access to care for patients in JIWAKA and Highlands.

JOB PROFILE

  • The Interpreter is a temporary position, to facilitate and support field visit of visiting Medical Team.
  • Target groups for discussion will be focused on women’s engagement in community, as such only Female Candidates will be considered.
  • To providing interpretations across Jimi, North Waghi, and Anglimp-South Waghi, the interpreter will also assist in the understanding of local context.
  • Translate documents from mission language into a local one upon request.
  • To provide interpretation during interviews and discussions with health facility staff and volunteers, community leaders, and other community members including survivors of violence.
  • Provide written translation of interviews and group discussions/meetings from Tok Place/Tok Pisin to English and other project-related documents needed to translate from English to Tok Pisin.
  • Support MSF staff to understand relevant aspects of the cultural background of community members, acting at times as a cultural broker, specifically targeting women community leaders and health care staff and volunteers.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Secondary education

Languages: English and local languages within Jiwaka

Knowledge: Desirable experience working as interpreter and computer literacy
