We are currently seeking to recruit a Senior Drill & Blast Engineer for our Mine Technical Services Department. Reporting to the MTS Superintendent, the primary objective of the role is to ensuring the safe and efficient management of all Drill and Blast technical requirements, which includes Drill & Blast Design, Blast Masters, short to medium term scheduling, optimization and improvement projects, QAQC systems management, and the supervision and development of Graduate Engineers
Key roles and responsibilities include:
- Completion of Drill and Blast designs compliant with Hidden Valley standards and approval processes, and peer-review of designs completed by junior engineers
- Development of Blast Masters/ Bench Plans
- Maintenance and updating of the various Hidden Valley D&B databases
- Development of rolling four-week development schedule
- Daily delivery of drilling and charging packages for the operations department;
- Continuous improvement and maintenance of policies, procedures and systems as they relate to D&B
- Liaise with other functional groups (STP, Dispatch, Geology, Survey, Geotech and Production) to support maximum utilisation of drills and delivery of STP objectives
- Develop D&B budgets and manage the forecast and ordering of explosives and accessories
- Mentor and develop graduate engineers during their D&B rotation
- Manage in pit data collection from the QAQC team and using latest technologies to capture data from D&B, including drones and other blast monitoring devices
- Contribute to the development and optimisation of D&B parameters through the supervision of a rigorous and quantitative trial process which uses data to support conclusions and changes
- Develop and ensure the continuous improvement of safety best practice in line with Harmony Safety Policy and Systems
- Ensure all activities are in compliance with Harmony’s Environmental Policies and Procedures
- Safely & actively participates in incident investigations and ICAMS when required
- Clearly identify risks and put forward mitigation action plans to minimise impacts to the D&B plans
Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:
- A minimum of 7 years mine site experience in an engineering role, including a minimum of 5 years’ experience specifically as a Drill and Blast Engineer on an open-pit mine
- Have comprehensive understanding of Drill & Blast and tie–up design as it relates to movement induced ore loss and dilution, the preservation of structurally competent pit walls, and the minimisation of undesirable environmental impacts such as air blast & vibration
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering
- Demonstrate strong commitment towards safety
- A keen interest in learning new ways of doing things, and a willingness to propose out-of-the-box ideas for improvement to safety and efficiency
- A mindset to always look for better ways to deliver value.
- Experience with Mining specific CAD packages, with Surpac being considered advantageous
- Experience with Drill and Blast packages, with JK SimBlast 2D Bench being considered advantageous
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Must have Class 3 or 6 PNG Driving License
