Graduate Exploration Environmental Officer

Our Simberi Operations consists of an open cut mine on the northernmost island in the Tabar group of islands in the province of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. We are currently seeking a Graduate Exploration Environmental Officer to join our team, permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen/Buka/Madang/Goroka/Alotau/Wapenamanda/Popondetta/Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent.

The Graduate Exploration Environment Officer is to leading St Barbara’s exploration activities at Simberi, Papua New Guinea in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision, Business strategy, Values, policies and compliance obligations.

The opportunity

Role Accountabilities

  • Learn and ensure compliance with Simberi Mine EMMP for exploration sites.
  • Learn and conduct meteorology monitoring and data collection.
  • Learn to oversee the monitoring and management of Water Extraction and Discharge in Exploration activities.
  • Learn and ensure there is, where applicable, monitoring and data collection of Surface Hydrology, Groundwater, and ARD monitoring for exploration activities.
  • Learn and ensure there is monitoring and management of Surface Water Quality in particular, by providing baseline (pre-disturbance) water sampling and analysis on exploration licences.
  • Learn and ensure Land Disturbance and Rehabilitation is managed in a sustainable manner, in compliance to statutory requirements and company standards.
  • Learn and ensure Waste Management of all exploration activity is conducted in an environmentally safe and sustainable manner, in compliance with statutory requirements and company standards.
  • Learn and ensure that monitoring programme protocols are up to date and correct.
  • Learn to lead and contribute to the development of innovative approaches to solving complex environmental monitoring problems.
  • Learn and ensure the effective use of the appropriate systems, identify and recommend system improvements.
  • Learn to collect, managing, and interpret reliable geoscientific data and using the data to produce and maintain the required reports and related products.
  • Learn to write annual exploration licence compliance reports for EL609 for submission to CEPA.

Business Support

  • Contributing to ensuring that the Papua New Guinea exploration function meets all relevant internal and external compliance obligations and is considered a welcome guest in host communities.
  • Contributing to the Exploration Department complying with all Government environmental legislation and regulatory instruments; and St Barbara’s Environmental Policy, management system, plans and procedures.
  • Preparing timely, accurate and relevant environmental reporting (weekly, monthly & annual) to the Exploration Superintendent, Exploration Manager and other internal and external parties as appropriate.

Safety, Environment & Community

  • Ensuring your own Health and Safety as well as the Health and Safety of other members of the Exploration team and Project contractors through compliance with statutory regulations and St Barbara’s Health, Safety and Environment Policies, Procedures and Standards (HSEMS).
  • Maintaining a proactive commitment to HSE excellence through frequent Visual Leadership observations and by attending and taking an active role in pre-start meetings.
  • Learning and applying the St Barbara Health Safety & Environment Management Standards (HSEMS) to all exploration activities.
  • Abiding by a set of mandatory zero tolerance rules (Rules to Live By).
  • Maintaining effective, transparent, and open communication and consultation with stakeholders associated with St Barbara exploration activities (including employees, contractors, suppliers and local community).
  • Strive to achieve goals and targets outlined in the Exploration specific HSEC Plan to drive continual improvement.

  • Contributing productively as a member of the Simberi Exploration Team.
  • Ensuring the work performance of self meets all role and business plan requirements.
  • Maintaining good relations with the communities within which we work.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values.
  • A BSc degree in Environmental Science discipline
  • A demonstrated strong capability in applying Health, Safety and Environment Policies, Procedures and Standards to exploration
  • Prepared to work out of remote fly camps in challenging conditions
  • Able to supervise the field personnel to maintain best practice field work
  • Demonstrated capability in organising work, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement
  • Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people
  • High energy and level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills
  • Demonstrated willingness to explore and embrace different cultures
  • Preparedness to take a well-reasoned stand on matters of importance
