The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) is seeking a dedicated and professional individual to join the Matheson Library team as Assistant Librarian – Collection Development.

Assistant Librarian - Collection Development

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the university’s academic community by developing and maintaining a high-quality library collection.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Selecting print and digital materials.
  • Liaise with academic departments to coordinate book orders and collection needs.
  • Respond to collection requests from patrons and academia, ensuring updates on request statuses.
  • Review orders to prevent duplication and ensure compliance with collection development policies.
  • Develop collection development policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Conduct collection assessment to guide collection development decisions.
  • Collaborate with acquisitions, cataloguing, and other library units to achieve collection goals.
  • Research and recommend new tools and vendor services for collection development.
  • Implement the process of weeding and withdrawing of materials.
  • Train and supervise library assistants.
  • Participate in library strategic planning and service improvements.
  • Prepare statistical reports on collection development and provide to the library management.
  • Perform weekend and shift duties.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Technical Services Librarian.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: A degree in Librarianship or equivalent. Degrees in other disciplines with relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in academic or research libraries, particularly in collection development.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of collection development practices, publishing industry trends, and digital resources.
    • Familiarity with print and electronic reference tools, including web-based databases.
    • Effective communication, negotiation, and time management skills.
    • Analytical skills

Conditions of Service

Assistant Librarian I/II PGK35,751 - PGK49,843 per annum

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
