PAPUA NEW GUINEA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

The University

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is located in the industrial city of Lae, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. The city of Lae has an airport with flights to any location in PNG. The University is the only technological university in the country. It has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges. The main campus has 14 academic departments including a Department of Open and Distance Learning (ODL). It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language and business. The university has an Information Technology Services department and a Library.

Applications are invited for the following positions:

Department of Applied Physics

The department offers a four-year undergraduate degree and a graduate masters program in Applied Physics. The department has also run another four year degree program for Radiation Therapy course. The Radiation Therapy course is slowly phasing out and a new program in Biomedical Engineering Program will start in 2018. The department has 17 academic members, 6 technical staff and 3 administrative staff. The department is relatively small but plays a very important role in which the department provides service courses to ten (10) other departments in the University while running two undergraduate courses.

Senior Lecturer

A doctoral degree from a recognized university in Physics or a closely related discipline is required for this position. The candidate must have at least 5 papers that have been published in listed, peer reviewed journals and at least 5 years of full time university teaching or the equivalent in industrial research work. Candidates with some experience in postgraduate teaching and student supervision are preferred. Familiarity with teaching in distance mode and with using learning management systems such as Google Classroom or Moodle will be an added advantage.

Lecturer II

A doctoral degree from a recognized university in Physics or a closely related discipline is required for this position. The candidate must have at least 2 papers that have been published in listed, peer reviewed journals and at least 2 years of full time university teaching or the equivalent in industrial research work. Candidates with some experience in postgraduate teaching and student supervision are preferred. Familiarity with teaching in distance mode and with using learning management systems such as Google Classroom or Moodle will be an added advantage.

The successful candidates are required to have very good communication skills and take leadership roles in their areas of specialization as well as conduct research and teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The candidates must also have the ability to routinely apply for competitive grant funding in their research areas and develop links with relevant local industries for collaborative research.

Base Salary Range: Senior Lecturer PGK55,323 - PGK67,618 per annum

IMA Range : PGK61,338 - PGK74,643 per annum

Base Salary Range: Lecturer II PGK45,720 - PGK55,882 per annum

Base IMA Range : PGK52,436 - PGK63,039 per annum

IMA = International Market Allowance

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

Initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year (paid on fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of K750.00 per annum, settling-in/out allowance of K1,700.00 for single & K3,600.00 for accompanied plus K200.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor's office. Free, fully furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.
